Halsey arrived as part of a slew of female pop rebels who emerged in the wake of Lorde’s early-2010s recalibration of the genre’s operating hierarchies. As had been clear many times before — but was forgotten in the early part of the 2000s — the reluctant girl in the corner or the punk rebel was just as capable of making world-shaping pop as the popular extrovert. Halsey, with her dyed pixie haircut and wild-child interviews, appeared to fit the bill.

What if that was a miscalculation, though? Or, at the least, a
misunderstanding of her talent?
Halsey’s second album, “hopeless fountain kingdom,” opens questions that the first one seemed to have answered. She is a strong but not terribly distinct vocalist, and, most perplexing for someone positioned as a spirited rejoinder to pop’s center, she’s malleable.

That was clear on “Closer,” her exceedingly lackluster smash hit last year with the Chainsmokers. And it’s clear on this album, which liberally borrows styles from other singers.
